Commemorating 50 Years of Service to Humanity

In commemorating our 50 years of unwavering service to humanity, a milestone marked not only by gratitude, but by reflection and action. We extended our impact and reach through impactful community engagements across South Africa, where we honoured our past by building hope for the future. Our 50th Anniversary commemorative events were a vibrant tapestry of unity, faith, appreciation and purpose.

A Morning of Reflection and Celebration at Kirstenbosch  

SANZAF marked the beginning of its 50th Anniversary celebrations with a memorable breakfast at the iconic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town. 

Surrounded by the serene beauty of nature, guests gathered to reflect on five decades of compassion, service and community upliftment. 

The morning was filled with beautifully presented breakfast spreads and uplifting conversations, as SANZAF representatives shared stories of the organisation’s profound impact over the past 50 years. Guests were inspired by the reflections on SANZAF’s unwavering commitment to serving humanity and the lives transformed through countless acts of charity and empowerment. 

A Recipe for Impact

In commemoration of 50 years of Service to Humanity, we held our 50 of 50 meal preparation. A day dedicated to preparing and distributing nourishing meals to those most in need. 

The aroma of generosity and the sound of cheerful teamwork filled the air as our recipe for impact came to life with the help of our dedicated staff and volunteers. Across Cape Town, 50 different communities benefited from this act of collective kindness, reaching underprivileged families, children and the elderly. 

This initiative strengthened community bonds and reaffirmed SANZAF’s role as a pillar of support. It inspired new partnerships and volunteer sign-ups, demonstrating the ripple effect of generosity. This not only marked a milestone in SANZAF’s history but also reinforced the idea that compassion and collective action can transform lives. 

SANZAF’s Chef School  

In a landmark celebration of 50 years of service to humanity, SANZAF unveiled the next chapter in its commitment to education, empowerment and community upliftment, with the grand re-opening of the SANZAF Chef School in Durban. This momentous occasion brought together a diverse and inspiring gathering of esteemed donors, renowned chefs, dedicated well-wishers and respected industry experts. Each guest represented a thread in the rich tapestry of support that has allowed SANZAF to transform lives over the past five decades. 

The Chef School is more than just a training facility; it is a beacon of hope and opportunity for aspiring culinary talents from disadvantaged communities. Designed to equip students with accredited skills and hands-on experience, the school empowers young individuals to carve out sustainable careers in the hospitality and food industries with the power to uplift families and communities. 

The Chef School stands as a sustainable initiative aimed at nurturing culinary excellence and entrepreneurship. The event strengthened valuable industry partnerships, creating pathways for internships, mentorships and employment opportunities. This project reinforces SANZAF’s long-standing commitment to education and skills development as powerful tools for poverty alleviation. 

The school is poised to produce graduates who will not only find meaningful employment but will also give back to their communities, creating a cycle of empowerment for generations to come. 

Wellness Programme Empowers Communities to Take Control of Diabetes and Well-Being

Service to humanity goes beyond meeting immediate needs, it’s about nurturing long-term well-being and supporting healthier, more empowered lives. In line with this vision, we hosted a deeply impactful Wellness Programme in Durban dedicated to raising awareness around diabetes management and overall health. 

With community members in attendance, the event was guided by an experienced Diabetic Specialist, who provided invaluable insights into the risks and realities of sugar diabetes, as well as practical steps toward healthier living. Personalized health plans were crafted and shared with each individual affected. The Diabetic Specialist generously scheduled follow-up consultations to offer continued medical guidance and monitor each guest’s progress. The programme sparked essential conversations about preventative care, nutrition and lifestyle choices, equipping attendees with tools to take charge of their health. 

SANZAF Youth Week: Celebrating Faith, Heritage & Unity

In celebration of 50 years of service to humanity, SANZAF hosted an inspiring and action-packed Youth Week in Cape Town from 25th to 29th September, a week dedicated to nurturing faith, community connection and heritage among the next generation of leaders. The programme was a balance between physical activities and spiritual rejuvenation.

Day 1: Sports Day 

Hosted by the Goodwood Islamic Society, the week kicked off with a vibrant Sports Day where the youth came together to celebrate the values of teamwork, sportsmanship and community in a fun, active environment.  

Day 2: Youth Thikr, Spiritual Reflection and Remembrance 

Day two brought a profound moment of spiritual reflection with a Youth Thikr hosted by AMR Youth and led by Khuddamul Islam. The gathering nurtured spiritual mindfulness and encouraged young hearts to draw closer to Allah (SWT) through remembrance. 

Day 3: Youth Jumuah & Potjiekos Competition 

The Paarl Islamic Youth Group hosted a special Youth Jumuah, followed by a lively Potjiekos competition that blended South African culinary heritage with community engagement. 

Day 4: The Amazing Race: Journeying Through Masajid Heritage 

One of the standout highlights of the week, the Amazing Race, took participants on a dynamic journey across Cape Town’s Masajid. From drumming in Gugulethu, to an engaging Q&A on mosque history in Simon's Town, the race concluded with a hands-on food preparation and parcel distribution project, reinforcing both heritage appreciation and compassion-driven action. 

This adventure was designed not only to educate, but to promote deeper connections with the House of Allah (SWT) and an understanding of the critical role Masajid have played in shaping the South African Muslim identity. 

Day 5: The Noble Prophetic Hadith Reading 

The week concluded at Siddique Mosque in Elsies River with the Reading of The Noble Prophetic Hadith Concerning Zakah and Charity. Esteemed scholars Moulana Hassiem Cassiem, Shaykh Yusuf Ihsaan Hendricks and Shaykh Isa al-Jazairi led this memorable gathering. Youth were given the opportunity to ask questions, engage meaningfully and reflect on the deep wisdom of the Hadith, particularly the principles surrounding Zakah and selfless giving. 

Youth Week’s activities engaged over 100 youth across Cape Town in heritage, faith and community activities. Strengthening young people’s understanding of Masjid history and the pivotal role of charity (Zakah) in Islam. 

With community spirit and intellectual curiosity through Q&A sessions and collaborative challenges, the week reinforced SANZAF’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders grounded in Islamic values and social responsibility. 

SANZAF Gratitude Dinner: Commemorating 50 Years of Service to Humanity

As part of SANZAF’s golden milestone, 50 years of unwavering service to humanity, we gathered for an unforgettable Gratitude Dinner at Islamia College Banquet Hall in Cape Town. An evening filled with reflection, heartfelt appreciation and deep inspiration. 

The event was a powerful reminder of SANZAF’s journey over five decades: from humble beginnings to becoming a beacon of hope, compassion and transformative change in communities across South Africa. 

A Night of Reflection, Faith & Fellowship

The evening opened on a beautifully spiritual note with a soulful Qiraa’at recited by Sheikh Ismail Londt, setting the tone for a night of gratitude and remembrance. Guests were uplifted by moving performances from the talented voices of Khuddamul Islam, whose passion and artistry truly resonated with the spirit of the occasion.  Adding even more meaning to the night, our esteemed guest speakers, Sheikh Faaiek Gamieldien and Sheikh Ismail Kamane delivered thought-provoking addresses that reflected on SANZAF’s 50-year legacy and the timeless importance of Zakah, charity and social solidarity. 

"The Zakah Nasheed"

A special highlight of the evening was the exclusive announcement of the release of Khuddamul Islam’s latest track The Zakah Nasheed.” Written by Sheikh Ismail Londt and dedicated to SANZAF’s 50th Anniversary, the Nasheed is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring power of charity and giving. It promises to inspire and uplift, reinforcing the essential role of Zakah in building just and compassionate communities. 

Youth Week Champions Honoured

The evening also celebrated youthful achievement and community spirit, as we proudly crowned the winners of the SANZAF Youth Week Amazing Race: 

1st Place: Goodwood Islamic Society Youth 

2nd Place: Paarl Muslim Youth Movement 

3rd Place: AMR Youth 

These vibrant teams navigated Cape Town, journeying to Masajid and tackling a series of fun and meaningful challenges embodying both the essence of youth empowerment and a deep love for heritage and faith. 

SANZAF Golf Challenge

SANZAF hosted a spirited and purposeful Golf Challenge at the scenic Humewood Golf Club in Gqeberha, an event where sportsmanship met generosity on the greens. The day brought together 15 enthusiastic teams and 62 dedicated golfers, all teeing off for a cause that has touched countless lives over the past five decades. Beyond the friendly competition, the Golf Challenge served as a meaningful platform for connection, collaboration and community upliftment.  The day began with registration and warm welcomes, followed by a spirited round of golf marked by camaraderie, laughter and good sportsmanship. As the sun set, players and supporters gathered for a formal dinner and prize giving ceremony. 

During the evening programme, SANZAF extended heartfelt gratitude to ABSA Islamic Banking for their generous sponsorship, along with special recognition for all sponsors who contributed to the success of the event. Their support enables SANZAF to continue its impactful education and development programmes, which empower individuals and uplift communities across the country. 

The SANZAF Golf Challenge was a celebration of community, generosity and the power of collective action to drive positive change. 

Health, Hope and Healing Programme

As SANZAF continued to celebrate 50 Years of Service to Humanity, we remain committed to not only addressing immediate needs but also empowering communities to embrace healthier, more fulfilling lives. In this spirit, SANZAF hosted a similar Wellness Day at our Manenberg Office, in collaboration with the Manenberg Clinic and YMCA. The day was dedicated to nurturing both body and mind, creating a space for connection, care and community well-being. 

The Wellness Day offered essential health screenings for all participants, providing guidance and early detection to support long-term well-being. In addition to health checks, guests were treated to both a nourishing breakfast and lunch. Adding a special touch of self-care, the YMCA team provided relaxing hand and foot pampering sessions, reminding our community that small moments of kindness and self-love are an important part of overall wellness. By facilitating this Wellness day, SANZAF ensured that this community could access necessary resources.

Zakah Workshop in the Heart of Bo-Kaap

In collaboration with the Boorhaanol Islamic Movement and the Bo-Kaap Cultural Hub, SANZAF hosted a deeply enriching Zakah Workshop in the culturally vibrant and historic Bo-Kaap. The workshop was led by SANZAF’s National Chairperson, Moulana Mogamat Hassiem Cassiem, alongside the esteemed Shaykha Basheerah Hendricks Gamieldien. Together, they offered valuable insights into the spiritual and social dimensions of Zakah, highlighting its pivotal role in alleviating poverty, nurturing community welfare and advancing economic justice. 

The event was attended by a diverse gathering of local organisations and neighbouring communities, all eager to deepen their understanding of how Zakah can be harnessed to bring about lasting and meaningful change. 

SANZAF’s Milestone Health Check-up Initiative

Another special health check-up initiative was launched in Pietermaritzburg to promote the well-being of our valued beneficiaries. This milestone programme was designed to offer essential medical services to beneficiaries, ensuring that their health and quality of life received the attention and care they deserve. 

The health check-up initiative reflected SANZAF’s holistic approach to service, covering a wide range of critical health screenings, from vision and dental care to audiological evaluations and pap smears. Each service was carefully selected to address real health needs and offer lasting benefits to participants. 

Restoring Sight and Confidence: Eye Examinations 

Beneficiaries were referred for comprehensive eye tests at Spec Shop, conducted by Dr. Amina Sirkhot. Of these, individuals completed their assessments and were identified as needing prescription spectacles. The distribution of new spectacles was met with heartfelt gratitude and excitement. Beneficiaries expressed the profound difference the glasses made in their daily lives, especially as many had been using outdated or no corrective lenses due to financial constraints. 

Bright Smiles: Dental Check-ups 

Beneficiaries received professional dental check-ups and cleanings at Midlands Medical Centre, under the care of Dr. Sadia Gani. The dental services were not only appreciated for their quality but also for their accessibility. For one participant, it was the first-ever dental treatment and the experience left her highly satisfied and reassured about her oral health. 

Hearing Support: Audiological Evaluations 

An audiological assessment was arranged for one beneficiary at Mediclinic, facilitated by Dr. Gerald Runganathan. Following the evaluation, a hearing aid was provided, promising to significantly enhance the individual’s hearing and quality of life. The recipient expressed deep gratitude for this vital support, which would otherwise have been out of reach. 

Women’s Health: Pap Smear Screenings 

Female beneficiaries underwent pap smear procedures at Omega Pharmacy in Northdale. The participants highlighted the compassionate care and thorough explanations they received throughout the process, which not only provided clarity but also empowered them with knowledge about their own health. 

A Milestone of Meaningful Impact 

The 50th Anniversary Health Checkup Initiative served as more than just a health campaign, it was a reaffirmation of SANZAF’s enduring commitment to caring for the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of the community. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from beneficiaries highlighted the life-changing effect of this initiative and the lasting impact of compassionate service. 

As SANZAF continues to lead initiatives that uplift and empower, the success of this health check-up programme stands as a testament to the strength of community, partnership and the power of collective care, an enduring reflection of 50 years of service to humanity. 

As we close the chapter on our 50th Anniversary commemorations, we do so with full hearts and renewed vision. Each event, workshop and celebration was a tribute to the power of collective compassion, faith in action and service to humanity. SANZAF will continue leading into the future equipping communities with tools for dignity, empowering the next generation and upholding the sacred trust of Zakah.
