Who is Qurbani Compulsory for?

Scholars differ slightly across the four major Madhabs regarding the ruling of Qurbani:

Madhab

Ruling on Qurbani

Who it applies to

Hanafi

Wajib (obligatory)

Adult, sane Muslims with wealth above Nisab

Maliki

Fard Kifayah (communal obligation)

If some perform it, others are absolved

Shafi’i

Sunnah Mu’akkadah (highly recommended)

Strongly encouraged for those able

Hanbali

Sunnah Mu’akkadah

Emphasised for financially capable Muslims

Key Criteria:

  • Muslim
  • Adult (or household head on behalf of dependents)
  • Financially able (meeting Nisab threshold)

Even where not strictly obligatory, Qurbani is a highly emphasised act that should not be neglected without valid reason.

Qurbani Animal Requirements

Islam sets clear guidelines to ensure that the sacrifice is valid and humane.

Permissible Animals:

  • Sheep
  • Goats
  • Cattle (cow/bull)
  • Camels

At what age can you slaughter?

  • Sheep: 1 year (or 6 months if healthy and well-grown)
  • Goat: 1 year
  • Cow: 2 years
  • Camel: 5 years

Health Conditions:

The animal must be:

  • Free from disease
  • Not blind or one-eyed
  • Not severely injured or lame
  • Not extremely weak or emaciated

Sharing:

  • Sheep/goat: 1 share (for one person)
  • Cow/camel: up to 7 shares

Ensuring these conditions are met is essential for a valid Qurbani.
