Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: SANZAF Youth Development Programme 2026

Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: SANZAF Youth Development Programme 2026

In preparation for Youth Day 2026, SANZAF hosted a dynamic three-day Youth Development Workshop from 9 to 11 June 2026 in Durban, bringing together aspiring young leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers for an immersive journey of learning, self-discovery and empowerment. The programme was designed to equip youth with practical business knowledge, financial literacy, leadership skills and entrepreneurial confidence, providing them with the tools needed to navigate an increasingly competitive world.

With the support of dedicated SANZAF staff, industry experts and the Minara Chamber of Commerce, the initiative empowered participants to think beyond their circumstances and envision a future filled with opportunity.

Day One: Laying the Foundations for Success

The programme commenced at SANZAF office in Durban with 33 enthusiastic participants, including 24 young women and 9 young men, eager to embark on their entrepreneurial journey.

The day focused on building a strong foundation for business and personal development. Distinguished speakers from the Minara Chamber of Commerce shared valuable insights into entrepreneurship, financial planning, wealth creation and self-reliance.

Participants explored critical questions every entrepreneur must consider:

  • How do you identify a viable business opportunity?
  • What problem does your product or service solve?
  • How can innovation create sustainable success?
  • Why is financial planning essential for long-term growth?

Sessions covered business start-up fundamentals, savings and investments, financial independence, budgeting and business compliance. Through interactive discussions and engaging activities, participants were encouraged to think critically about their future careers and the role they could play in strengthening their communities.

The atmosphere was one of excitement and possibility as young people began transforming ideas into achievable goals.

Day Two: Navigating the Digital Economy

The second day shifted focus to one of the most powerful tools available to modern entrepreneurs: digital marketing.

Hosted at the Minara Chamber of Commerce offices in Sherwood, the workshop welcomed 29 participants for an engaging session led by renowned digital marketer and social media influencer, Shinaaz Karodia.

Drawing from her own professional journey, Karodia demonstrated how social media can be leveraged as a strategic business asset rather than simply a platform for communication.

Participants gained practical knowledge on:

  • Building a personal and professional brand
  • Creating engaging digital content
  • Growing and connecting with audiences
  • Maintaining professionalism online
  • Using storytelling to establish trust and credibility

The session highlighted how digital platforms can open doors for entrepreneurs, particularly those with limited access to traditional business networks.

The programme then moved into business plan development, where facilitator Reece Reuben guided participants through refining their business concepts and strengthening their business models. Young entrepreneurs were challenged to identify their target markets, clarify their value propositions and prepare compelling presentations for the final day.

By the end of the session, participants had developed not only stronger business ideas but also greater confidence in presenting themselves and their visions.

Day Three: Turning Ideas into Action

The final day marked an exciting transition from theory to practical entrepreneurship.

Returning to the SANZAF Office in Durban, 26 committed participants gathered to showcase the business concepts they had developed throughout the programme.

Facilitators conducted an internal shortlisting process, providing valuable feedback and mentorship before selecting 12 participants to present their business ideas to an internal panel. The presentations reflected the remarkable growth that had taken place over the three-day programme.

Participants demonstrated:

  • Creativity and innovation
  • Strategic thinking
  • Marketing knowledge
  • Understanding of target audiences
  • Confidence in public speaking
  • Entrepreneurial ambition

What stood out most was the determination and enthusiasm displayed by the youth. Their business ideas represented not only personal aspirations but also a desire to create meaningful impact within their communities.

Entrepreneurship in Practice

To reinforce the lessons learned, SANZAF introduced a practical entrepreneurship exercise designed to provide real-world business experience.

Each participant received a Motala Perfumes product box valued at R500 and was tasked with marketing and selling the products independently. This hands-on initiative provided participants with an opportunity to apply their newly acquired skills in:

  • Sales and marketing
  • Customer engagement
  • Pricing strategies
  • Business development
  • Income generation

Participants will report back on their sales performance, enabling SANZAF facilitators to provide continued mentorship and evaluate opportunities for sustainable micro-enterprise development.

This practical component transformed classroom learning into real entrepreneurial action, giving participants a tangible opportunity to begin their business journeys.

The SANZAF Youth Development Programme was about far more than entrepreneurship.

It was about unlocking potential.

It was about nurturing confidence.

It was about creating pathways for youth to become financially independent, socially responsible and purpose-driven leaders.

As we commemorate Youth Day, programmes such as these serve as powerful reminders that investing in today's youth is an investment in the future of our nation. Through mentorship, education and practical empowerment, SANZAF continues to equip the next generation with the skills and confidence needed to thrive.

The future belongs to young people who are empowered to dream boldly, lead responsibly and create opportunities not only for themselves but for those around them.

At SANZAF, we remain committed to walking this journey alongside them, because empowered youth build empowered communities and empowered communities build a stronger South Africa.
