Water Well
“Which charity is best?” The Prophet said, “A drink of water.” [Abu Dawud]
SANZAF Waqf water well project aims to relieve the basic need for clean drinking water and sanitation in rural villages in Malawi. The primary source of livelihood for the people of Malawi is agriculture and livestock rearing. By providing these remote villages with water, we not only improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and death from water-borne diseases but also enable them to irrigate their farmlands and hydrate their livestock. Clean water also enables them to take care of personal hygiene and gives them more ease in practicing their Deen.

Where are the wells being built?
Alhamdulillah so far SANZAF has been able to build close on 100 wells in rural, poverty-stricken areas all over Malawi where they don’t have access too running water. most of the people there have to walk several kilometers just to be able to fetch water for basic hygiene and sanitation, cooking or drinking and wudhu. Sponsoring a well to help their communities flourish and provide them some relief is an excellent means of gaining rewards for yourself or a loved one.
How do we know when the well is completed?
You will receive an email to inform you once the well has been completed. A month later you will then also receive a certificate with a picture of the well and the location of it.
Can I sponsor a well on behalf of someone else?
Yes, you can sponsor a well on behalf of someone else, whether living or deceased for their continued reward, where you will also gain the reward without theirs diminishing.
Can I make multiple intentions for sponsoring a well?
Yes, you can. You can make an intention for the people to be able to make whudhu to perform salaah, for them to be able to use that water towards tahaarah, towards irrigating their fields to be able to grow crops which they can help feed others. There are many different intentions you can make for this one act of charity.
What are the options for sponsoring a well?
On SANZAFs website, and in the email I’ll send you, you can see that you can either sponsor an entire well once-off or contribute a portion towards a water well project, or even do monthly installments towards a water well project. Your name will only be displayed on the well if you sponsored it in full.
What kind of wells are being built?
SANZAF is building regular wells that require a bucket to draw water from the well. We do not use the submersible pumps because maintenance then becomes a problem, they are expensive and don’t have a long life-expectancy. If a bucket gets lost or damaged, the local Imaam or community members can then replace it and people will continue to benefit.
How long does a well last?
Typically a well can last up to 50 years, or even longer depending on the underground water levels, which increase with rainfalls in the area. Also, once a well is dug, it remains even after it has dried up so that should the groundwater levels ever rise again, the well will fill up again.
