One of the highlights of the Youth Week Programme was the reading of The Noble Prophetic Hadith Concerning Zakah and Charity held at the Siddique Mosque in Elsies River in Cape Town this past Sunday.

The keynote address, delivered by Moulana Yaaseen Abass, emphasised the rich tradition of compiling 40 Hadith, a practice made famous by Imam Al-Nawawi. Moulana Abass also noted that this is the first collection of 40 Hadith focused on Zakah and Charity in South Africa.

Shaykh Abdur-Razaaq Majal, SANZAF staff member, who compiled the 40 Hadith along with a team of scholars that reviewed the Hadith Book, namely, Shaykh Yaaseen Abbas, Shaykh Muhammad Yusuf Hendricks, Ml. This gathering showed that SANZAF has not only actively contributed to the institution of al-Zakah but has also made meaningful contributions to Islamic literacy, education, advocacy, Da’wah, al-Tarbiya and the study of Hadith.”

Shafiek Barendse emphasised the importance of Prophetic interpretation of hadith which provides insight into the Prophet’s PBUH, understanding and application of Quranic teachings. He also added that the hadith narrations help establish the Sunnah (customs and practices) of the Prophet (SAW), which Muslims strives to emulate.

The event concluded with Moulana Yaaseen Abass granting Ijazah (permission to narrate Hadith) in the six major books of Hadith to those present. Special recognition was also given to him with two plaques for his commitment to Islamic education and community service.
