SANZAF Durban Outreach Programme at Baitul Aman Children’s Home

SANZAF’s female bursary students who attend the weekly Madrassah classes decided to facilitate an outreach programme to Baitul Aman Children’s Home in La Mercy, North of Durban.

Spirits were high on the day and upon arrival at the institute they were warmly welcomed by a student representative – Zaynab Ziyadi – as well as the principal, Moulana Tayob. Whilst Zaynab welcomed everyone, Moulana went on to explain how and why the institute was established, its functionalities and the laws and policies that govern the institution.

Zaynab then took the students for a tour of the boarding homes where students of various age groups are housed. After the tour the students spent some time playing and interacting with the five toddlers in the Abandoned Babies Unit and went on to meet and interact with the eldest girls of the institute.

With a fondness created for the young ones, they too joined the students in the dining hall where they awaited the arrival of the older girls. At first the kids were shy and did not say much but after introducing themselves and mentioning one interesting fact about their life, the sound of laughter filled the air.

From this point on there was no turning back, friendships were forged – smiles and tears shared. All this done whilst playing games and doing group activities some of it whilst seated indoors and others whilst taking in some sunlight in the outdoor courtyard.

For the gift presentation, all the children were asked to come to the dining hall and each child was then called up to the front. They were handed their gift and they showed sheer joy for the presents they received – it was at this point that most of the students felt completely humbled – the look of sheer delight and immense happiness made it all worthwhile.

And as the saying goes: “Sometimes those you wish to inspire end up inspiring you” could not have been truer in the case of these lovely young ladies most of whom spent half a decade or more at the institute. They shared words of wisdom when asked to say a few words about their dreams and aspirations.

This visit culminated with many hugs and smiles, exchanging of contact numbers and promises to keep in touch. The students then thanked the principal for allowing them the visit and expressed their gratitude to the girls for availing themselves.
